In the 7th Congressional District of California, there are 13,000 Democrats registered today who previously skipped voting in the midterms. In the 2018 midterms the margin of win for this seat is expected to be probably 1,500 votes. And besides the Congressional race, there are a number of down-ballot items that deserve a vote.
Our project between now and November 2018 general election is to knock on the doors of these "midterm skipping" voters and ask them to recommit to voting. We have a voter reactivation program that involves people signing a postcard promising to vote that we mail back to them right before the November 2018 election.
Schedule: Sunday, June 24, 2018, 12pm - 4pm
Please plan to arrive and sign in at 12 noon.
- If you have canvassed in our program before, you can pick up your walk packet at that point and go out. We can match you with a partner if you don't have one.
- If you haven't attended our event before, we will train you in our program before you go out and we’ll match you with a partner if you don't have one.

What to expect
You'll be canvassing with a packet of 25 or so names and addresses of registered Democrats who have skipped midterms but who have voted in presidential elections. These are great conversations with people who share your Democratic values. Our previous canvassing work suggests that for every 2 registered Democrats you speak to, 1 will say yes to filling out our voting reminder postcard. It's an easy ask and a lot easier than registering new voters!
What if it turns out to be a really, really hot day? In that case, there are two ways to go:
- You can go out canvassing in teams of three people. One person can park in the shade and provide a cool refuge by keeping the car air conditioning running. The other can two knock on doors and then retreat to the cool car to regroup.
- Or — You can elect to remain indoors for the afternoon. There is work to be done in preparing the mailing of Voter Commitment postcards, which will go out in early October. We will be glad to have your help.
If Democrats fail to vote in this midterm election, it's possible this seat could flip from Democrat to Republican. Don't regret not volunteering. Instead, be a voter motivator!
